A staff member of the Minnesota Regional Treatment Center is accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a patient in the Forensic Mental Health Program.
Seth Bradley Beckman, 39, of St. Peter, was charged with felony criminal sexual conduct in the third degree and two felony counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct on Jan. 6.
In a report to a special investigator on July 7, 2022, the patient detailed three separate incidents of physical contact with Beckman during the month of June, 2021. According to the criminal complaint, she and Beckman talked often after he began working her unit and she believed he cared about her.
Their relationship eventually turned physical and on June 13, 2021 the pair kissed according to the patient’s testimony. Beckman kissed her again on June 26, 2021 and touched her breast over her clothing.
The following day, on July 27, Beckman allegedly escalated sexual contact and digitally penetrated her. He reportedly took her to the library because there were no cameras and told her to lay down on the table and unzip her pants.
The patient reported that she was not ready for him to touch her and she began shaking due to the discomfort. She grabbed his arm to get him to stop and the contact lasted approximately 30 seconds.
The patient told law enforcement she didn’t report the incident because Beckman told her not to say anything and she wanted to protect him. She said it took her a year to come to terms with what happened. On July 2, 2022 she reported the incident to a staff member and said Beckman sexually manipulated her.
According to the complaint, Beckman provided a statement to law enforcement on Aug. 18 where he initially described his relationship with the patient as kissing and touching. After denying that he touched the patient sexually, Beckman reportedly admitted there was “some relevancy” to the allegation he touched her genitals in the library. The defendant said he did not fully penetrate the patient and described the contact as mutual.
Beckman is scheduled for a first court appearance on Feb. 14.
